Mayers, Joseph dismiss South Africa for 320 on second morning

South Africa 320 (Markram 96, de Zorzi 85, Mayers 3-32, Joseph 3-60) vs West Indies

South Africa were dismissed 16 minutes into the second morning, losing their last three wickets in 18 balls to finish with a second successive first-innings total over 300 in this series. West Indies’ seamers, particularly Alzarri Joseph, were on the money and used the short ball to get rid of South Africa’s tail. Joseph finished with 3 for 60.

After resuming on 311 for 7, South Africa only added nine runs to their first-day total and lost their last recognised batter on the third ball of the morning. Heinrich Klaasen was greeted with a Kyle Mayers inswinger, then a legcutter and then a wide delivery. He played an expansive drive, got a thick edge and was caught behind.

Joseph greeted Keshav Maharaj with a short ball barrage. Maharaj left the first one alone, defended the next one and then tried to pull the third but missed. He connected with the fourth, but was cramped for room and skied a top edge. Gudakesh Motie settled under it at midwicket.

Kagiso Rabada steered Mayers between third slip and gully for his first runs but swung at the next ball and miscued wide of mid-on. It was not long before West Indies were rewarded. Joseph kept up his short-ball attack and directed it at Gerald Coetzee. He served up two absolute snorters that fizzed past the outside edge and then found a touch of Coetzee’s glove with the third to end South Africa’s innings early.

All told South Africa lost their last eight wickets for 72 runs from the point where Temba Bavuma shouldered arms to Jason Holder and none of their batters from Bavuma onwards scored more than 28.
