New Zealand decided to bowl against Australia

Aaron Finch will have an early bat in his last ODI after Australia were inserted in Cairns. He announced yesterday that this would be his final match in the format, conceding that the 2023 World Cup was too far away and it was time to give a new captain the chance to bed in before that tournament.

Finch has endured a lean run with the bat, making just 26 runs in his last seven ODI innings and fell for a second-ball duck two days ago.

Australia brought in Josh Inglis at the top of the order in place of the rested David Warner and Cameron Green, who suffered cramps in the first game, has returned for the injured Marcus Stoinis.

New Zealand are still trying to get a first victory against Australia in their country since 2011 having twice seen winning positions slip away in this series. In the opening game they had Australia 44 for 5 before Green and Alex Carey marshaled a fantastic recovery. On Thursday the home side were 117 for 8 before climbing to almost 200 then New Zealand’s batting folded for 82.

They have made three changes with Finn Allen, Glenn Phillips and Lockie Ferguson brought into the side. Martin Guptill, Michael Bracewell and Matt Henry have been left out. Henry misses out as precaution after feeling pain in his left side following the second ODI.

Australia 1 Aaron Finch (capt), 2 Josh Inglis, 3 Steven Smith, 4 Marnus Labuschagne, 5 Alex Carey (wk), 6 Cameron Green, 7 Glenn Maxwell, 8 Sean Abbott, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Josh Hazlewood

New Zealand 1 Devon Conway, 2 Finn Allen, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Tom Latham (wk), 5 Daryl Mitchell, 6 Glenn Phillips, 7 Jimmy Neesham, 8 Mitchell Santner, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Lockie Ferguson, 11 Trent Boult
