Captain unbeaten on 215 at lunch, as Bangladesh hit back through Ebadot Hossain and Shoriful Islam
Lunch New Zealand 423 for 5 (Latham 215*, Conway 109, Shoriful 2-69) vs Bangladesh
The day, however, began with Conway getting to his century off the first ball. He glanced Ebadot down the leg side, having to wait overnight on 99. But Conway was gone in the sixth over of the morning when Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s direct hit from the covers ran him out. Conway had struck 12 fours and a six in his 109 off 166 balls.
It ended a 215-run second wicket stand but brought Taylor to the crease, perhaps for the last time in his Test career. The Bangladesh team gave him a guard of honour before allowing him his favourite cover drive and cut shot in his first two overs at the crease. Latham, meanwhile, reached the second double-century of his career when he played a check drive off Taskin Ahmed in the 101st over. He became the sixth New Zealand captain to get to the milestone.
But shortly after this, Taylor’s innings ended when he heaved to Shoriful at square leg. The bowler Ebadot and a couple of Bangladesh fielders wished him on his way out, while Henry Nicholls, the next batter, allowed Taylor to get the full applause on his own by waiting in the dressing room before Taylor was back.
Subtly, Bangladesh created more chances around this time. Taskin dropped Latham on 208 off his own bowling, before Nicholls was caught behind off Ebadot for a duck. Shoriful then removed Daryl Mitchell – also taken by the keeper – for 3 at the stroke of lunch.
New Zealand had finished the first day on an already imposing 349 for 1, with Latham leading them with his 12th Test hundred. He had added 148 for the first wicket with Will Young, who had got to his third consecutive fifty in the series. But Young would be frustrated to be unable to convert into a century after he was caught at point for 54. He had struck five fours in his 114-ball knock, which was built around supporting Latham’s charge at the other end.
Bangladesh’s bowlers had a poor outing following their magnificent performance in Mount Maunganui in the previous game. They gave away 44 boundaries on the first day, as they had bowled an inconsistent line and length for much of the day. Shoriful had taken the only wicket to fall.
