Ebadot rips through New Zealand as Bangladesh complete historic win

New Zealand bowled out for 169, leaving the visitors to chase 40 for a historic win against the world champions

Innings New Zealand 328 (Conway 122, Nicholls 75, Shoriful 3-69, Mehidy 3-86) and 169 (Young 69, Taylor 40, Ebadot 6-46, Taskin 3-36) lead Bangladesh 458 (Mominul 88, Litton 86, Boult 4-85) by 39 runs

Within the first ten minutes, Bangladesh had the big one. Ebadot got one to move ever so slightly into Ross Taylor, who inside edged the ball on to his leg stump. The fielders were cock-a-hoop, as they all ran towards Ebadot, who gave a sajda before his usual salute.

In his next over, Ebadot got Kyle Jamieson to play uppishly towards midwicket, where big Shoriful Islam dived to his right to complete a brilliant catch. Taskin Ahmed wouldn’t be left too far behind. He got Rachin Ravindra caught behind for 16, before yorking Tim Southee to take his third, and Bangladesh’s ninth wicket.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz, brought on to take out the tail-enders, removed Trent Boult when substitute Taijul Islam took a brilliant catch at deep midwicket. New Zealand, starting 130 runs behind Bangladesh’s 458, started off by losing their captain Tom Latham in the ninth over. Taskin got one ball to rise on him a little extra, which Latham inside edged on to his stumps.

Devon Conway, who made 122 in the first innings, was the next to go when he got into a tangle against Ebadot. He also inside-edged one to his pads, but the ball popped to the slips from where Shadman Islam jumped out to complete the catch. Umpire Chris Brown denied the appeal but Bangladesh were asking for the catch. The review upheld their appeal.

Will Young and Taylor added 73 runs for the third wicket, but the pair offered couple of chances. Shadman dropped Taylor in the midwicket boundary when he was on 17, and when he moved to 29, he was nearly run out.

Shortly after Young reached his second fifty in the game, he fell to Ebadot’s good length delivery, which opened up one end for Bangladesh. Ebadot hit back again a ball later when he clean bowled Henry Nicholls, and in the next over, had Tom Blundell lbw. New Zealand lost three wickets for no runs, in the space of seven Ebadot deliveries.
