The visiting side went to tea on the second day on 79 for no loss after bowling the hosts out for 330

Tea Pakistan 79 for 0 (Abid 52*, Shafique 27*) trail Bangladesh 330 (Liton 114, Mushfiqur 91, Hasan 5-51) by 251 runs

Pakistan openers Abid Ali and Abdullah Shafique comfortably played out the second session on the second day of ther Chattogram Test. Abid was the more enterprising of the two openers, but the two of them – Shafique is on debut – blunted the Bangladesh attack without too much fuss.

Abid reached his third Test fifty, having made an unbeaten 52 with six fours and one six in his 89-ball stay so far. Shafique remained unbeaten on 27 off 85 balls at the break. Abid struck the first three boundaries in the Pakistan innings, all cover drives, before Shafique got into the act with a flick through midwicket.

Bangladesh’s only sniff came in the 13th over when Taijul Islam appealed for a leg-before decision, although on first look it seemed to be all bat as Shafique tried to force the ball off the back foot. Taijul couldn’t convince his captain to take a review, but replays revealed that the ball had struck Shafique on the pad first, and he was a pretty good lbw candidate.

Abid thumped Abu Jayed for his first six almost immediately after, before Shafique did the same to Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

Earlier, Hasan Ali bowled a searing opening spell to nullify Bangladesh’s solidity from the first day. He removed the overnight centurion Liton Das with a delivery that zipped into his back leg, struck plumb in front of the stumps. Liton made 114 off 233 balls with 11 fours and a six, having added 206 for the fifth wicket with Mushfiqur Rahim.

Hasan then got another to sharply cut back into Yasir Ali’s stumps as the debutant lasted only 19 balls. Mushfiqur fell in the 90s for the fourth time in his Test career, when he was caught behind off Faheem Ashraf.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz batted well despite all the wickets falling at the other end. He struck six fours in his unbeaten 38, but ran out of partners quickly. Shaheen Shah Afridi removed Taijul Islam before Hasan removed Abu Jayed and Ebadat Hossain in consecutive deliveries. This was Hasan’s sixth five-wicket haul, five of which have come this year.
