Emergency meetings are being held this afternoon to establish his position

Enoch Nkwe has informed Cricket South Africa of his intention to resign as South Africa’s assistant coach. Emergency meetings are being held this afternoon to establish his position.

“Nkwe has indeed signalled an intention to resign, and this matter is being considered by the board. The chairperson and the acting CEO are currently engaging with Nkwe about his future. A further statement will be made when these consultations have been concluded,” CSA said in a release.

ESPNcricinfo has learnt that Nkwe is interested in becoming more involved with the strategic side of the game, and is hesitant to travel. Discussions were on for another role for Nkwe including appointing him as a technical director, who would oversee the national team’s long-term strategy.

“We want to ensure that he remains within the cricket structures and to discuss an alternate arrangement with him,” a source told ESPNcricinfo.

Nkwe, the former Gauteng batter, was named the men’s team’s assistant coach when Mark Boucher took over as the head coach in December 2019. Nkwe was the interim team director starting August of that year, took the South African team to tour India, and was given the new role under Boucher after Graeme Smith took over as the CSA acting director of cricket.

Prior to that, Nkwe coached the Lions franchise for a season and had earlier worked with the South Africa A side and the Netherlands national side. Nkwe also won the MSL in its inaugural season as the the head coach of Jozi Stars.
