India opener Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the five-match Test series against England beginning in August, sources in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) told NDTV on Wednesday. Gill will reportedly stay on with the Indian Test squad in England. Abhimanyu Easwaran, who was named as a standby player by the BCCI when the squad was announced, has been earmarked as his replacement in the squad, sources said. India also have Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul in the squad as cover for the opener’s position, and one of them is likely to walk out with Rohit Sharma when the series starts.

Gill, 21, has played eight Tests and has scored 414 runs an average of 31.84. The youngster has scored three half-centuries, with a highest score of 91.

BCCI had announced a 20-member squad for the World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand in Southampton and the England Test series.

Abhimanyu Easwaran is among the four standby players.

Easwaran is a veteran of 64 First Class matches and has scored 4401 runs at an average of 43.57. He has 13 centuries and 18 fifties, with a high score of 233.

The first Test against England is set to begin on August 4 at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.

That will be followed by games at Lord’s, Headingley, Oval and Old Trafford.

Gill was part of the WTC final against New Zealand. He failed to perform, scoring 28 and 8 as the Kane Williamson-led side won the marquee clash by eight wickets to be crowned champions.
