Australia vs India: Rohit Sharma, Others Available For Sydney Clash After Testing Negative For Coronavirus

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has cleared the five players, who were earlier placed in isolation — Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Navdeep Saini, Prithvi Shaw and Rishabh Pant — after the entire Indian contingent in Australia tested negative for coronavirus. The players will now be available for selection for the third Test in Sydney that begins on January 7. All members of the Indian cricket team, including Rohit and the other four players, underwent RT-PCR tests on Sunday with the result coming back negative.

“Playing members of the Indian Cricket Team and support staff underwent an RT-PCR Test for Covid-19 on January 3, 2021. All tests have returned negative results,” the BCCI had said.

The players were under scrutiny for a bio-bubble breach afterthey were spotted at a restaurant in Melbourne, and a fan posted shared a video featuring the players on social media.

The players were put in isolation soon after. However, they were allowed to train “in accordance with the strict protocols that have been put in place to ensure the ongoing safety of all members of the Indian and Australian squads,” Cricket Australia (CA) had said in a release.

“The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Cricket Australia (CA) were today alerted to a video posted on social media that purported to show Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, Prithvi Shaw and Navdeep Saini eating at an outdoor venue in Melbourne on New Year’s day,” the CA release read.

“The BCCI and CA are investigating the matter and seeking to determine whether the outing constitutes a breach of biosecurity protocols.

“In the interim, on the advice of the Australian and Indian medical teams, the aforementioned players have been placed in isolation as a precaution.

“This will include separating the group of players from the broader Indian and Australian squads when traveling and at the training venue,” the release added.
