Tim Southee won the toss on a green pitch under overcast conditions in Christchurch and put Sri Lanka into bat. Southee noted that the green tinge to the wicket was the reason for the decision.
New Zealand have made one change after their one-run win against England, bringing in Blair Tickner in place of Will Young. A four-pronged pace attack will include Southee, Tickner, Neil Wagner, and Blair Tickner, who recovered from back spasms in time to make the team.

Sri Lanka go in with three seamers and have picked Prabath Jayasuriya as their spinner. Dhananjaya de Silva is a potential fifth-bowling option.
