Toss South Africa choose to bat vs West Indies

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and chose to bat on an atypically dry Wanderers pitch. He reasoned that the nature of the surface prompted the hosts to pick two specialist spinners in Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer.

West Indies also selected two spinners, with left-arm fingerspinner Gudakesh Motie returning from a back injury to join offspinner Roston Chase.

South Africa had also announced two other changes on the eve of the game: local batter Ryan Rickleton and allrounder Wiaan Mulder were included in their XI, with Marco Jansen, Keegan Petersen, Senuran Muthusamy and the injured Anrich Nortje dropping out.

For West Indies, Motie came back into the side in place of fast bowler Shannon Gabriel. Alick Athanaze and Akeem Jordan will have to wait further for their Test debuts.

This is the last Test for both South Africa and West Indies in the current World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, with neither side in contention for the final.
