Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bowl against Australia
Dinesh Chandimal returns to the T20I XI, and left-armer Binura Fernando plays as the second frontline seamer, with Sri Lanka having won the toss and chosen to bowl in the first match against Australia at the SCG.
Although both Chandimal and Fernando had been part of Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup squad last year, they had limited opportunities owing to their form. Chandimal’s excellent Lanka Premier League, in which he was one of the tournament’s best finishers, and Fernando’s height, have seen them earn back their places however.
Sri Lanka are fielding two other quicks in Dushmantha Chameera and Chamika Karunaratne. Chandimal will take the gloves in the absence of Kusal Mendis, who is isolating after testing positive for Covid-19.
Australia’s XI was no surprise, as it had been named on the eve of the match. Josh Inglis plays his first international match, but will not be taking the gloves, with Matthew Wade also in the side. Ben McDermott, meanwhile, is set to open alongside Aaron Finch, as David Warner has been rested for this series. McDermott is in outstanding form, having topped the Big Bash League’s run charts with 577 at a strike rate of 154.
The surface is expected to be good for batting. There is a chance rain will interrupt play, however.
