Ireland won the toss and chose to bowl vs Zimbabwe

Paul Stirling put Zimbabwe in to bat in Harare after toss was delayed by 45 minutes by rain which reduced the game to an 18-over contest. Sikandar Raza, Zimbabwe captain, said that he would’ve bowled first too because of the rain, but that his team would not let toss dictate the result of the final game of their home summer. The hosts come into the game with a 1-0 series lead and cannot lose the series as the first game was washed out.

Craig Young‘s four-wicket haul appeared to put Ireland on the ascendancy, but No. 6 Tony Munyonga dragged Zimbabwe out of a hole with an unbeaten 43 to seal a tight three-wicket win for the hosts in Harare.

Their victory with four balls to spare now gives Zimbabwe an unassailable 1-0 lead in the three-game series with the first T20I washed out and the third encounter remaining on February 25.

Young turns perfect replacement

The quick was not in the T20I squad originally, but brought in late to replace the injured Mark Adair. Adair had been Ireland’s best bowler in the ODIs, but Young’s new-ball spell made up for his absence.

His first ball of the evening was a short ball that Zimbabwe opener Tadiwanashe Marumani half-heartedly pulled towards short fine leg. Three balls later, he dug another one in and took Wessly Madhevere’s outside edge to Paul Stirling. Next over, Brian Bennett sliced one to deep backward point and Ireland had the early edge.

Later, when Ireland were desperate for a wicket, his dismissal of Tashinga Musekiwa at what seemed to be a crucial point in the game left him with figures of 4 for 24.

Zimbabwe’s lower-middle order steps up

With the early collapse, the experienced pair of Raza and Burl were the perfect batters to follow. Ireland kept the pressure up, but Raza grinded it out with only two fours in his 27-ball 22. He could afford to with a middling target.

Burl’s 27 at a strike rate of 135 kept the Zimbabwe innings in touch with the rate. Ireland, though, dismissed both in quick succession with Burl edging Harry Tector behind and Raza hitting down long off’s throat to leave Zimbabwe at 64 for 5.

Munyonga, though, showed great maturity in navigating a tricky period by contributing in the 33-run sixth-wicket stand with Musekiwa (15) and another 15 runs with Wellington Masakadza. No. 9 Richard Ngarava struck two crucial fours late in the 19th over off Young before Munyonga hit the winning runs with a thrashing through the covers.

Ireland stutter after rain break

After losing Stirling early, the other opener Lorcan Tucker (46) held fort in the company of No. 3 Tector (28) to lift the innings. Tector, the more enterprising of the two, fell in the eighth over to Raza trying to find a big shot, leaving Ireland at 59 for 2.

But Tucker and No. 4 Curtis Campher failed to gain momentum like Tector, adding only 40 runs in their 5.5 overs together and their dismissals shortly after the rain break came in a phase when Zimbabwe’s bowlers kept things tight.

Blessing Muzarabani, Trevor Gwandu and Raza all went for under six an over. Gwandu’s dismissals of Tucker, George Dockrell and Neil Rock crippled Ireland’s pursuit of a big flourish, while Raza broke two dangerous partnerships. Ireland scored only 16 in the last three overs to finish on a below-par 137 for 8.

Only nine overs of play were possible before the first T20I between Zimbabwe and Ireland in Harare was called off due to rain.

The match was already shortened to nine overs a side with weather delaying the toss by more than two hours, and the rain returned right after Zimbabwe finished their innings, forcing the match to be abandoned.

Craig Young, Josh Little and Ryan Burl put in impressive performances after Ireland opted to chase.

Young, drafted into the T20I squad after Mark Adair was injured in the preceding ODIs, and Little, playing his first T20I since the 2024 T20 World Cup, picked up two wickets each, even as Ireland shelled three chances, while Burl revived Zimbabwe after they were reduced to 11 for 3 inside the three-over powerplay.

Young, Little blow away Zimbabwe’s top order

After Zimbabwe managed just three runs from the first over, they tried to force the issue in the second, knowing that the powerplay restrictions were for just three overs. Brian Bennett got a top edge for a boundary before trying to loft a length ball from Young down the ground. The length wasn’t right for the shot and he couldn’t clear Harry Tector running back from mid-off.

Sikandar Raza promoted himself to one-drop, but he miscued a pull off his first ball to short fine leg to leave Young on a hat-trick.

Wessly Madhevere prevented the hat-trick, but there was more joy in store for Ireland. In the next over Little snared Tadiwanashe Marumani to start off with a wicket maiden.

Burl digs Zimbabwe out of a hole

Paul Stirling turned to spin in the fifth over, and experienced Burl used the opportunity to get Zimbabwe out of trouble. Burl launched Gareth Delany so far over long-on that a new ball was needed. But the change in balls did not make much of a difference to him, as he slog-swept Delany for back-to-back sixes over long-on.

The next over was another big one, as Burl took 19 runs off Curtis Campher.

Burl started by lofting the allrounder over long-on for six. Two balls later, he looked to uppercut a short ball and got a thick top edge over the keeper for a four.

He then went across the stumps and played a cheeky flick past short fine for another boundary, and to add insult to injury for Ireland, Ben White dropped him at deep midwicket off the last ball of the over.

But the drop did not cost Ireland dearly, as Little had him caught at long-on two balls later, with Tector taking a good catch running in from the ropes.

The rest of the Zimbabwe batters failed to middle the ball consistently, but managed to tick along, even as Tector took his third catch of the game.

Young finished the innings with an excellent final over, conceding just seven runs off it, with Zimbabwe finishing on 77 for 5. His figures of 2 for 15 could have been even better, but Tashinga Musekiwa was put down twice off his bowling in that final over.

The rain arrived again just as the players made their way back for the innings break, and no further play was deemed possible.

It was an overcast morning in Harare and there are chances of rain, most likely an hour or two into the game, which could hand Zimbabwe the advantage.
Toss Ireland chose to bowl vs Zimbabwe

Ireland captain Paul Stirling won the toss and elected to bowl in a bid to level the series in the second ODI in Harare.

The visitors named an unchanged XI from the first ODI, while Zimbabwe made one tweak, bringing in right-arm quick Trevor Gwandu in place of left-arm seamer Newman Nyamhuri.

Harare has a forecast of possible thunderstorms in the afternoon, something that could have factored into Ireland’s decision at the toss. It had rained the night before, but was dry in the morning, ensuring the toss went through on time.

Zimbabwe come into the match with a 1-0 lead after Brian Bennett’s sensational 169 helped them register a 49-run win in the series opener.

Zimbabwe: 1 Brian Bennett, 2 Ben Curran, 3 Craig Ervine (capt), 4 Sikandar Raza, 5 Wessly Madhevere, 6 Johnathan Campbell, 7 Tadiwanashe Marumani (wk), 8 Wellington Masakadza, 9 Trevor Gwandu, 10 Richard Ngarava, 11 Blessing Muzarabani

Toss Ireland opt to bowl vs Zimbabwe

Paul Stirling, the Ireland captain, decided to chase in the first ODI against Zimbabwe in Harare. Zimbabwe are looking to snap a losing streak, looking to avoid a fifth defeat in a row.

Sikandar Raza slotted into the Zimbabwe XI after a successful campaign at the International League T20 (ILT20) tournament in the UAE where, as vice-captain, he won the title with Dubai Capitals. Joshua Little, the left-arm swing bowler for Ireland, came into the visitors’ XI to boost their bowling. There was also an ODI debut for Johnathan Campbell – son of former captain Alistair Campbell – for Zimbabwe, joining a rare list of father-son duos to represent the team. Craig Ervine was also back leading Zimbabwe after missing the one-off Test for personal reasons.

While the chasing team has won five of the last seven completed games in Harare, forecast of rain later in the day could have played a part behind Ireland’s decision to bowl too. The two sides had met in an ODI series at the same venue in December 2023 too, with Ireland winning 2-0 with successful chases on both occasions after the first game was washed out.

“It’s a morning start, but we’ll have to adapt quickly,” Stirling said at the toss. “We’ve put the Test win behind us quickly. Zimbabwe are never a dull side.”

Ervine said they would’ve bowled too, citing the “movement early on.”

“Seeing the pitch, don’t think there are any demons in there. We’ll be cautious in the first ten overs.”

Rain was the biggest threat Ireland faced when they came into the Queens Sports Club on day five. But in 18.3 overs, they wrapped up the only Test against Zimbabwe with a 63-run win. They needed to create seven chances for the last three wickets, and in the process completed their first hat-trick of Test wins in their ten-match history. It is the earliest point any team has earned a hat-trick of Test wins, bettering South Africa, who needed 14 matches.

Matthew Humphreys converted his four-for into a career-best 6 for 57, with Andy McBrine – his spin-bowling partner – closing out the game by knocking over Richard Ngarava with the new ball.

Wessly Madhevere, Zimbabwe’s last ray of hope, batted 195 balls for his 84. When his outside edge was beaten and stumps rattled by a quicker length ball from Humphreys, he could not drag himself out of the field, covering his face with his bat in despondence as the game was effectively done.

The day started 30 minutes earlier than scheduled with 37 overs being lost on day four. Humphreys, who had bowled 18 overs to stumps, was handed the new ball. He needed three overs to create a chance – when he had Madhevere nearly chip a drive to cover – and one more ball to trap Newman Nyamhuri plumb in front and complete his five-for.

McBrine replaced Mark Adair right after and created two chances in his second over, both of which went down. Lorcan Tucker dropped one that went low off Richard Ngarava’s edge and McBrine couldn’t hold onto a low skimmer the next ball. In the next over, Paul Stirling shuffled to the right at first slip to fetch Madhevere’s aerial reverse sweep but couldn’t get in reach.

Ireland took the new ball in the 81st over and McBrine found extra bounce with it rightaway. The sun broke out but Zimbabwe’s hopes flickered off in the 84th, when Humphreys got Madhevere, his sixth scalp.

Blessing Muzarabani had put on 67 for the final wicket in the first innings with Trevor Gwandu, but to put on 74 with Richard Ngarava was too big an ask. Ngarava hung around for 39 balls and took a couple of swings. He was beaten in the 86th and knocked over in the next.

McBrine flighted a full ball on middle stump, beat the slog sweep, and set the smiles free among Ireland’s camp. When asked about the hat-trick of wins at the presentation, Ireland’s captain Andy Balbirnie said, “Just waiting for the DVD to come out! We are desperate to play, we don’t know when our next Test match is.”

As per the FTP, they are scheduled to play Afghanistan at home in July.

Ireland were made to feel at home in Bulawayo, albeit in a slightly devious sense as rain washed out large chunks before bad light ended day four. But by taking four wickets in the 53 overs spread across two sessions, the visitors will come out as favourites on the final day. However, the grim forecast for day five could deny Ireland a win.

Hope isn’t lost completely for Zimbabwe, even though they need another 109 with three wickets in hand. Wessly Madhevere, their top scorer, is unbeaten on 61. And as they showed in the first innings, their lower order can make handy contributions.

Matthew Humphreys, the left-arm spinner, bowled unchanged for 18 overs – separated by a short rain break in the middle – that yielded 4 for 37. With the pitch assisting spin, he is likely to play an important role tomorrow as well if the weather permits.

Sunday was a stop-start day as bad weather delayed the start by 15 minutes. Barry McCarthy needed six balls to make a mess of nightwatcher Trevor Gwandu’s stumps with a full delivery that deviated past the outside edge.

Brian Bennett survived a close lbw shout against Mark Adair in the second over of the day. Madhevere’s tactic of shuffling across the line induced a leading edge but it fell safely to Adair’s left.

Adair and McCarthy bowled nine of the 12 overs that were possible before the rain halted play for nearly three hours.

Zimbabwe resumed from 71 for 4 after the break and Madhevere survived a tough chance off Craig Young in the first one post-resumption and copped a bouncer on the helmet a little later. Meanwhile had a more serene stay before edging Humphreys behind as the spinner began his long spell.

Johnathan Campbell was scratchy at the start against spin and survived two near-chop-ons in his first 30 balls, off which he made six. He picked up two fours and two threes on the off side before rain created a small stoppage with Zimbabwe on 146 for 5.

Humphreys and Andy McBrine enjoyed the turn offered by the pitch so much that Andy Balbirnie persisted with them despite the thick cloud cover. The decision was rewarded after the break as Humphreys took a sharp return catch to dismiss Campbell and end the 56-run sixth-wicket stand.

Humphreys later dismissed Nyasha Mayavo, Paul Stirling at slip grabbing the rebound off Tucker’s gloves.

In the meantime, Madhevere reached his maiden Test fifty. He and Newman Nyamhuri took Zimbabwe close to 200 when bad light forced stumps 12 minutes before the scheduled time.

Ireland are well placed to complete a hat-trick of Test wins after setting Zimbabwe a target of 292 and reducing them to 38 for 3 at stumps. Andy Balbirnie and Lorcan Tucker struck fifties with contributions all the way down the order helping them take control of the game in Bulawayo.

Richard Ngarava, who took three of the last four wickets to fall, finished with a four-four; but it was the part-time spin of Wessly Madhevere that removed Balbirnie and Andy McBrine – Ireland’s top scorers of the second and first innings respectively.

Balbinie started the day with Campher and the duo grew their partnership from 37 to 75 with relative ease. There were nicks – like in the first over of the day – that weren’t carrying, the funky fields from Jonathan Campbell weren’t forcing batters into shots, and Blessing Muzarababi’s five-over opening spell was seen off without loss.

Campher picked up two boundaries off Trevor Gwandu – a stylish whip and a technically sound straight drive – before the bowler found his length to quieten the batter and then nick him off after drinks.

Ireland were 121 for 2 – a great entry point for Harry Tector, who got off a pair and got into his innings cautiously. Balbirnie, meanwhile, coasted along at his own pace to bring up a 106-ball fifty. He nearly dragged one on in the 34th over and weathered an examination by spin to take the lead up to 142 at lunch.

The spin of Campbell and Madhevere took hold after the break; first with the former ripping a legbreak to beat Tector’s full-faced block and trap him lbw, then the latter ripping an offbreak to beat Balbirnie’s flick to do the same.

Paul Stirling, who was more generous in peppering attack with defence, swept Madhevere over square leg for six and heaved Campbell wide of mid-on for four. He was out caught down leg, trying to pull Muzarabani fine, but was unhappy with the decision.

Tucker was off to a quick start too. He swept Campbell for two fours in the 59th over and consolidated after Stirling fell. He stitched handy 39-run and 23-run stands with McBrine and Mark Adair as Zimbabwe kept at it with spin before the second new ball became available.

McBrine was troubled by Madhevere, who beat his outside edge first (71st over) then snagged it for Nick Welch at slip to complete the catch (75th). Adair slogged a six off Madhevere and was comfortable against the old ball but edged two of the five he faced against the new ball, the second of which went to Takudzwanashe Kaitano’s hands at slip. It left Ireland 261 for 7 at tea.

Ngarava toyed with Barry McCarthy before knocking him over with a well-executed slower ball. Gwandu got a shortish ball to skid past Craig Young’s defences but that inconsistent bounce might be something that comes back to haunt Zimbabwe soon. Tucker and Matthew Humphreys, the last pair to bat, did run and walk along the danger area of the pitch a couple of times, but they were not pulled up by the umpires.

Tucker brought up fifty by pulling Ngarava and then flayed him over extra cover. But when he charged and tried to slap him over the off side two overs later, the top edge took the ball straight to cover. Ireland, who had conceded a seven-run lead, were all out for 298.

Zimbabwe came out to bat with an hour left in the day and McCarthy induced an edge from Ben Curran in the sixth over to have the opener caught behind for the second time in the game. A length ball that went away was set up by a few coming in to find the edge.

Adair ended Kaitano’s promising start, which included three boundaries, with another set-up. This time with outswingers before slowing up a fullish ball to beat the inside edge and hit the stumps.

Humphreys trapped Welch, Zimbabwe’s top scorer in the first innings, lbw with an arm ball that beat his flick. It brought Gwandu for nightwatch duty and he survived 12 balls to stumps. Brian Bennett, in at No. 4, had a close shave in the final over.

Blessing Muzarabani‘s inspired 67-run stand for the tenth wicket with Trevor Gwandu took Zimbabwe from a position of danger into the comforts of a hard-fought if slender lead. But it was a sign of the pitch easing out, something Ireland’s top order took advantage of.

Peter Moor, who used to play for Zimbabwe, dispatched Muzarabani, who didn’t bowl consistent lines, as Ireland raced to 42 for 0 in seven overs. Richard Ngarava got one to angle away to ensure Moor’s good work ended on 33, but his partner, Andy Balbirnie, joined Curtis Campher to ensure Ireland went to stumps without further damage.

The signs were ominous for the bowlers on Friday as there was more brown than green on the Bulawayo pitch. And it took Welch just one over to reinforce that feeling as he smashed a full ball from Mark Adair over mid-off.

McCarthy adapted to the challenge in front of him and toyed with his lengths, lines and release points to reap useful reward. He found seam movement to trap Takudzwanashe Kaitano lbw in the third over of the day. Zimbabwe’s batters used the crease to meddle with the bowlers’ lines. That didn’t matter to McCarthy who nipped one past Brian Bennett’s inside edge and hit the stumps.

Welch, too, had a close call early on as he was cut in half by McCarthy. He marched through, otherwise, to a 78-ball fifty, much to the delight of his dad in the stands.

Wessly Madhevere, who got off to a quick start, hit one of the three sixes in the innings. It came off McBrine’s bowling but the offspinner had the last laugh, with some help from Lorcan Tucker who took a rebound catch – off square leg – to restrict him to 26. Zimbabwe were 143 for 4. Each of the partnerships for the first four wickets crossed 20. None of them, batting the opening stand, got past fifty.

McBrine struck again to have Johnathan Campbell three balls later. It was a soft dismissal as the Zimbabwe captain, also on Test debut, punched a wide-ish ball to cover point.

Nyasha Mayavo, the other debutant, hit a confident pull shot for six and a slashy drive for four on either side of tea. But an attempt at another big hit – a sweep off McBrine – trapped him lbw. McCarthy sent back Newman Nyamhuri for a golden duck as Zimbabwe slipped to 172 for 7.

All the while, Welch was happy to play unhurriedly and that continued in the eighth-wicket stand with Ngarava. Welch faced 41 of the 59 balls as the duo put on 20. Chances were created when Ngarava looked for some quick runs. He got away with a chipped drive off an Adair slower ball in the 59th over, but holed out to mid-off, trying to do the same, in the 61st.

Welch pumped Humphreys down the ground to get to 90 and retained strike for the next over. He got decent connection on the pull against Adair but was dismissed by a spectacular running catch by Harry Tector across the outfield at deep midwicket. Zimbabwe were 200 for 9, 60 runs behind, with Nos. 10 and 11 at the crease.

Muzarabani hit two boundaries off McCarthy as the duo batted calmly against the old ball… for nearly 20 overs. The spin of McBrine and Humphreys gave away 23 runs between overs 67 and 80, but the batters were now more comfortable.

Ireland took the new ball and Muzarabani hit Adair for two fours, one on either side of the wicket, in the 83rd over as Zimbabwe finished the second session just three runs in the deficit.

Muzarabani took his team into the lead by pulling Craig Young in the 86th over, but with a maiden Test fifty in sight, he was knocked over trying to slog Humphreys across the line, and Zimbabwe were bowled out for 267.

Zimbabwe’s strike bowler batting for long may have been a blessing in disguise, pardon the pun, for Ireland as he batted for 97 minutes late in the afternoon before taking the new ball.

Moor’s intent was clear from the very first ball, which he spanked through cover for four. He had a close call with a length ball, which kept low and was at the stumps but managed to stab it into the ground.

The absence of swing led Zimbabwe to shorter lengths but that suited Moor and Balbirnie, who unfurled some excellent back-foot shots. The placid nature of the pitch was on show even after Moor’s dismissal as an outside edge induced by Ngarava, off Balbirnie in the 12th over, landed well in front of second slip.

Gwandu, who was taken down earlier in the Test match, was more threatening here. In the 15th over, he had Balbirnie edge one in the cordon but the wicketkeeper Mayavo couldn’t collect. Other than that, Ireland cruised through to stumps with a healthy 76-run lead.
